All Saints Springhill Hospital

Springhill, Nova Scotia
1992
15,000 sq. ft.
Type: Institutional, Addition & Renovation
with The DuBois Plumb Partnership Inc. (Consulting Design Architects)

The All Saints Springhill Hospital was a three phase revitalisation project. Phase I involved re-cladding the existing hospital and constructing new outpatient, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and geriatric day care facilities. Phase II responded to increasing demands for long term rehabilitative care with the renovation of inpatient units, and Phase III was the construction of a new two-storey attached substance abuse centre.

Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and the geriatric day hospital are housed in bright, pleasant, relaxing spaces with large bay windows and vaulted ceilings.

The outpatient functions are grouped around a separate skylit waiting area with comfortable seating and pleasant interior finishes and colours. The new emergency department, ambulance entrance and renovated radiology department provide considerable improvement to patient care. Care was taken throughout the design of the facility to use colour, texture and natural light to organize and orient circulation through the facility.

The exterior is bright, cheerful and interesting, with special emphasis and articulation provided at the entrances. Special wind screens were designed to overcome problems with driving winds in this area.
